Application of Inclinometer Sensor on Aerial Work Platforms

Aerial work vehicle is a special vehicle that transports workers and equipment to the site and performs aerial work. According to the form of its lifting mechanism, it can be generally divided into four basic forms: telescopic arm type (straight arm type), folding arm type (curved arm type), vertical lifting type and hybrid type. Because aerial work platforms are widely used in power, street lights, municipal administration, gardens, communications, airports, shipbuilding (repair), transportation, advertising, photography and other aerial work fields, their safety is very important.

In order to ensure the safe use of aerial work vehicles, the American National Standards Institute officially introduced the ANSI A92.2 standard-"American National Standard-Vehicle Lifting and Rotating Work Platform" in 2019. This standard clearly states that the rated capacity is related to the angle between the boom and the horizontal direction. The manufacturer of the aerial work vehicle should install a device through which the operator can determine whether the boom is at a safe angle. In terms of slope stability, this standard specifies that the turntable leveling device should be used to determine whether the unit meets the stability standards in order to minimize the impact of slope terrain. In actual operation, when the terrain of the aerial vehicle is uneven, and the platform's load distribution is uneven, it is prone to rollover. At this time, an inclination sensor is installed to monitor the real-time tilt angle of the entire vehicle. When the vehicle body is uneven or tilted to a certain angle, it will automatically brake or alarm.

Taking the scissor-type work vehicle as an example, the manufacturer generally installs the SST20 MEMS inclinometer horizontally on the bottom of the aerial work platform and on the chassis of vehicle:

1. The SST20 inclinometer which is installed on the bottom of the aerial work platform can monitor the horizontal attitude of the work platform. When the tilt angle exceeds the limit value, the platform will automatically descend to ensure the personal safety of the operator.

2. The SST20 inclination sensor installed on the chassis of vehicle is used to monitor the leveling of the chassis. When running on uneven ground or on slopes, the inclination of the chassis is particularly important. Manufacturers of aerial work vehicles generally choose a dual-axis inclinometer to be installed on the chassis to detect the tilt status. Once the chassis exceeds a certain tilt angle, the dual-axis inclinometer will timely transmit relevant data signals to the control system and start the alarm in time to avoid accidents.
